About the Market
A considered market for an extraordinary site.
The Melbourne Makers’ Market is a monthly art and design market held at City Square on Swanston Walk every month throughout the year.
It’s brought to you by the team behind the Rose St. Artists’ Market, who’ve been running some of Melbourne’s best-loved markets since 2003 - across Fitzroy, Carlton, Heide, Rippon Lea, Como House, and beyond. With more than 6,000 creatives showcased over the years, we know what a great market looks like, and we’ve spent a long time thinking about what a great CBD market could be.
The answer, we think, is this: smaller, slower, and more considered than a general market. A place where every stall has been curated. Where the design quality across the whole site feels coherent. Where a visitor can spend an unhurried Saturday morning walking between forty makers who’ve each been selected for the originality and integrity of their work.
Our Curatorial Principles
Every stallholder at the Melbourne Makers’ Market is selected by our internal Curatorial Panel against published criteria. The bar is set deliberately high, and deliberately transparent..
To trade at the Melbourne Makers’ Market, every maker must be:
Maker-only - Every product must be made by the vendor or their named studio. No reselling, drop shipping, or franchise.
Local - Based in Greater Melbourne or regional Victoria, with a preference for studios within 30km of the CBD.
Emerging - In the first ten years of professional practice.
Original - Demonstrating a coherent design point of view, materials integrity, and an identifiable maker’s hand.
Sustainable - Showing an explicit relationship to material origin, repairability, or circularity.
About the Rose St. Artists’ Market
The Melbourne Makers’ Market is operated by The Rose St. Artists’ Market - Melbourne’s original curated makers’ market, running continuously since 2003. In that time, Rose Street has grown into one of the most respected market platforms in Australia, with a reputation for rigorous curation, genuine support for emerging makers, and a maker-only policy that has never wavered.
